How to Install a Chimney Liner

‘Tis the Season

Chimney liners are a necessity if you own a home with a wood- or gas- or pellet- or corn- burning fireplace. A thick, tarry smoke rises from every fire you burn, and without a liner, it will stick to the walls of your chimney and create a fire hazard.

Stay safe this holiday season and get a chimney liner installed.

Here’s what will happen:

  1. You’ll need an inspection:  Ron Jon Chimney will inspect the chimney to look for bends or restrictions that could interfere with pulling the liner through.
  2. Size Matters! Next, we’ll need to determine the correct diameter of the liner. For a wood stove/insert, we’ll ask for the owner’s manual for proper sizing or size it ourselves. For an open fireplace, we’re the experts.
  3. The product: Typically, a stainless steel flexible chimney liner will be part of the service and will come with all of the products / pieces that are needed to install the chimney liner safely.
  4. Insulation: We’ll then determine whether to use an insulation blanket or a pour-in insulation. If there is more than approximately 2″ clearance between the liner and chimney wall on all sides, the blanket liner is best.
  5. On the rooftop: Once the liner is installed, we’ll need to climb to the roof near the chimney. Don’t try this at home!
  6. Installation complete – with a few additional steps that should be done by a professional.

For safety:

  • Stainless steel liners, especially when cut, can be sharp. Please don’t touch if you’re curious or helping out.
  • Chimney sweeping: During this process, it is also important for us to clean out the creosote in the tee cap or fireplace, depending in your venting application.
